No. 3 in 3130/1914.
Sir,
REE 2 APR 18
Government House,
Hongkong, 4th September, 1917.
With reference to Your Honour's letter of the
21st of Juns, I have the honour to transmit for the information
of Your Honour and of the Pulsne Judge the enclosed copy of a letter from the Incorporated Law Society of Hongkong, and of a
nemorandum by the Attorney General representing the views of the
Bar, on the subject of the proposal for the amalgamation of the
two branches in Hongkong of the legal profession.
In the face of the views expressed by both
Solicitors and Barristers, I am not prepared to further consider
the question of amalgamation: nor am I disposed to consider
the question of the extension of the jurisdiction of the
Summary Court.
2.
I should, however, be led if Your Honour would
take into consideration the suggestion made by the Bar for
the institution of the Short Cause List, and the suggestion of
the Solicitors in paragraph 7 of the letter of the Law Society,
à.
I would also draw attention to paragraph 4 of
the same letter and enquire whether means cannot be found to
restrain the prolixity of Counsel.
His Honour
The Chief Justice.
I have &0*,
(sd.) F. H. May,
Governor, &o..
